In third grade, my teacher informed my parents that I would never go to college if I didn’t improve in reading. Bottom line, my reading skills sucked. So as concerned parents, my mother took the lead by spending evenings reading with me. The sacrifice was no television except for Friday and Saturday nights. Reading felt like punishment, but in reality my teachers had done me a huge favor. By age nine I had become a voracious reader, no longer interested in TV if I could get my hands on a Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys book. With these series as inspiration, I vowed to write a novel—one day.
